What is cold email?
A cold email is an email to a person or business that has not heard from you before, usually to propose a meeting, a partnership or a sale. "Cold" means there was no earlier contact, not that the message is impersonal: good cold emails are short, specific and relevant to the recipient.
Cold email is legal in many countries for business-to-business contact when it follows the rules, such as identifying the sender honestly and offering an opt-out under the CAN-SPAM Act. Rules for contacting individuals are stricter in places such as the EU and UK (see GDPR).
Why cold email matters
It is one of the few channels that works from day one and lets you choose exactly who to talk to. Relevance decides results: a few well-researched emails beat thousands of templates, and mass sending also damages deliverability.
How to write a cold email
- Send it to the right person, using the address they or their business publish.
- Write a plain, specific subject line, not clickbait.
- Open with why you are writing to them in particular: something you noticed about their business or work.
- Say in one or two sentences what you offer and the result it brings.
- Ask for one small, easy next step, such as a reply or a short call.
- Sign with your real name and company, and make opting out easy.
- Follow up once or twice, a few days apart, then stop.
Cold email FAQ
Is cold emailing legal?
In many countries cold email to businesses is legal when you identify yourself honestly, use accurate subject lines and offer an opt-out. Rules for individuals and for some countries are stricter. Check the law where your recipients are, and when in doubt, ask for a lawyer’s view.
How long should a cold email be?
Short: usually a few sentences that fit on a phone screen without scrolling. Busy people decide in seconds whether to read on.
