Sockpuppet
Black hat. Against platform rules or the law. Risks bans, fines and your reputation.
What is a sockpuppet?
A sockpuppet is a fake account controlled by someone who presents it as an independent person, typically to praise their own product, attack competitors, upvote their own posts or win arguments. It is a core tool of astroturfing.
Reddit, Wikipedia and most forums ban sockpuppetry and use account signals to detect it.
Why a sockpuppet matters
Sockpuppets corrupt the honest discussion that makes communities useful, which is why platforms punish them hard. If you have something to say about your product, say it from your own account and disclose who you are.
Risks of sockpuppet
- Bans of the sockpuppets and of the main account they are linked to.
- Loss of trust in the community once the link is discovered.
How to spot sockpuppet accounts
- Accounts created around the same time that agree with each other.
- Similar writing style, phrases or typos across accounts.
- Activity only in threads about one product or person.
- Accounts that vanish or go quiet after a discussion ends.
