Follow for follow
Grey hat. Allowed in some places and easy to abuse. Check the rules first.
What is follow for follow?
Follow for follow (F4F) is the practice of following accounts in exchange for a follow back, often promoted with hashtags such as #followforfollow. A related tactic, follow/unfollow, follows many accounts and unfollows those who do not follow back.
It is not always against the rules, but done at scale or with automation it is treated as spam.
Why follow for follow matters
The followers gained are not interested in what you post, so reach and engagement do not improve, and brands auditing the account see a padded audience.
Risks of follow for follow
- Mass following and unfollowing can trigger platform limits or action against the account.
- It fills the audience with accounts that are not interested in the content, lowering engagement.
