Ideal customer profile (ICP)
What is an ideal customer profile?
An ideal customer profile (ICP) is a description of the customer that is the best fit for your product: in B2B, the industry, size, location, budget and situation of the company; in B2C, the circumstances of the person. It is based on your best existing customers where you have them.
An ICP describes companies or situations. A buyer persona describes the individual people involved in buying.
Why an ideal customer profile matters
A clear ICP focuses everything: which leads to look for, which communities to join, which creators to work with and what to say. Selling to poor-fit customers costs more and churns faster.
How to write an ideal customer profile
- List your best customers: the ones who got value quickly, pay and stay.
- Find what they share: industry, size, location, tools used, the trigger that made them look.
- Note who does not fit and why.
- Write it in a few lines a teammate could use to accept or reject a lead.
- Revisit it as you learn.
Ideal customer profile FAQ
What is the difference between an ICP and a buyer persona?
An ICP describes the ideal customer company or situation; a buyer persona describes a person involved in the purchase, with their goals and concerns. You usually need one ICP and several personas.
