Social listening
What is social listening?
Social listening is the practice of following public conversations online, on social networks, forums, review sites, communities and news, about your brand, your competitors, your products and your industry, and turning what you learn into action.
It goes a step beyond social media monitoring, which collects and responds to individual mentions. Listening looks for patterns: what people praise and complain about, which features they ask for, how sentiment changes, and where your share of voice stands.
Why social listening matters
Customers say things in public they would never put in a survey. Listening shows real objections, real language and real demand, which feeds product, marketing and sales.
It also catches problems early, before a complaint thread turns into a crisis.
How to do social listening
- List what to track: your brand names and misspellings, product names, competitors and the problems you solve.
- Add words to exclude, to filter out namesakes and noise.
- Choose sources: Reddit, Hacker News, X, LinkedIn, review sites, forums, YouTube and more.
- Collect mentions on a schedule rather than checking by hand.
- Read them weekly: tag themes, sentiment and anything worth a reply.
- Share what you learn with product and sales, and reply where you can genuinely help.
Social listening FAQ
What is the difference between social listening and social monitoring?
Monitoring is collecting and responding to mentions one by one. Listening analyses them together for trends, sentiment and insight. Most teams do both with the same data.
Can I do social listening for free?
Partly. Native search on each platform and free alerts cover the basics, but they are manual and miss a lot. Tools collect mentions from many sources on a schedule so nothing has to be checked by hand.
